Window Insulators

Update: In all fairness, I did tear down the plastic from the window on the right and put up some Duck brand window insulator that I knew to be just one year old (as opposed to the unknown age of the stuff I did use) and it sealed adequately and is mostly wrinkle free.
Both of these windows have plastic on them. But is one more apparent than the other?
We had one nasty day with wind chills in the -40's. The wind was blowing the cold air straight into the house. The only thing that I had was the duck products window kit. I had one left over from a year ago and my mother gave me one she had (don't know how old that one was). The window on the right is done with the duck product window kit and the one of the left is with a brand new 3M window kit.
The duck brand tape would not stick and it blew open on both of the windows I put it on. The 3M tape is heavier and seems to adhere better. Also, the duck brand would not "melt" the wrinkles out. Although I seem to remember when I put the plastic on my windows at the mobile home it melted but then I'm not sure which product I used. It may be that this duck stuff was just old. To be fair I would need to try the new stuff. Has anyone tried this year's duck product window insulator?
